Hi, I’m Tamiyah Shehan, a journalism student at UNC Chapel Hill from Rutherfordton, North Carolina. I’ve always been drawn to connecting with people and capturing moments, whether through photography or video.
Growing up in a small rural town shaped my perspective and made me appreciate the diversity of experiences I’ve encountered at Chapel Hill. Throughout this semester, I’ve met people from all walks of life, which has inspired me to highlight stories that aren’t always told.
My creative approach centers on authenticity. I’m especially interested in capturing raw, unfiltered moments—those genuine instances when people open up and share their stories. While I’ve always been drawn to broadcast journalism, I’m also eager to explore new creative directions and expand beyond a single path.
Through my work, I aim to create meaningful connections and bring attention to perspectives that might otherwise go unseen.
Beyond My Work
When I’m not working, I love spending time with friends. I’m naturally extroverted, so being around others fills my cup in the same way creating does. I also have a strong love for fashion (and maybe shop a little too much). Expressing myself through clothing is another way I tap into creativity and feel more like myself.
